If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, heavy bleeding or severe swelling of your mouth or tongue, call 000 or go to your nearest hospital emergency department immediately.
Do I need an emergency dentist?
Contact our team if you have dental pain, swelling or an injury to your teeth or mouth. You do not need to know exactly what is wrong before calling.
Severe or persistent toothache
Call if tooth pain affects your sleep or eating, hurts when you bite, or keeps coming back. Your dentist can assess the cause and explain suitable treatment.
Broken, chipped or cracked teeth
A damaged tooth can feel sharp, painful or sensitive. Even without pain, contact us after a dental injury. Keep any broken piece in milk and bring it to your appointment.
A knocked out tooth
A knocked out adult tooth needs immediate dental attention. Handle it by the crown, which is the white part normally visible above the gum, and avoid touching the root. Keep it moist in milk if it is out of its socket and seek care immediately.
Never put a knocked out baby tooth back into its socket. Contact a dentist promptly for advice.
Swelling or a suspected dental infection
Painful gum or facial swelling, pus or a bad taste in your mouth can indicate an infection. Ask for an urgent assessment, particularly if you have a fever or feel unwell.
Breathing or swallowing difficulties require immediate emergency medical care.
A lost filling or crown
A lost filling or crown can leave your tooth sensitive or exposed to further damage. Call for advice on how soon you should be seen. Bring any detached crown with you and do not use household glue to replace it.
Wisdom tooth pain
Pain or swelling around a wisdom tooth should be checked, particularly if you have trouble opening your mouth. Your dentist can examine the area and discuss treatment options.
Unsure whether your dental problem can wait? Call our team on (02) 9477 1803.
What should I do before my appointment?
Call first and tell us when the problem started, how much pain you are experiencing and whether you have swelling, bleeding or an injury.
While arranging care:
- Avoid chewing on a damaged or painful tooth.
- After an injury, a cold compress against the outside of your cheek may help with swelling.
- Ask a pharmacist about pain relief suitable for you and follow the product instructions.
- Do not place aspirin directly on your tooth or gums.
- Seek further help promptly if your symptoms worsen.
Temporary pain relief does not treat the underlying cause. Do not delay urgent care for a knocked out adult tooth.
What happens at an emergency dental appointment?
Your dentist will ask about your symptoms and examine the affected area. X rays may be needed to help identify the problem.
They will explain the findings and discuss suitable treatment and associated costs. Depending on the assessment, treatment may involve repairing a tooth or filling, root canal treatment or an extraction.
Your initial appointment may focus on urgent treatment. Some problems require a follow up visit to complete your care.
Feeling anxious? Let us know when you call. We will listen to your concerns and explain each step. Meet our dental team.
How much does emergency dental treatment cost?
The cost depends on the assessment, any X rays required and the treatment needed.
Call (02) 9477 1803 to ask about the current emergency consultation fee and what it includes. Your dentist can explain treatment options and costs after examining the problem.
If you have private health insurance, bring your membership details. HICAPS claiming is available, and your rebate will depend on your policy and treatment.
