IV Sedation
IV Sedation or intravenous is like a twilight sleep where you are provided a relaxing sedative before a dental work is carried out. Hence, it is also known as ‘Twilight Dentistry’ as patients experience a twilight sleep during the procedure.
It is an ideal option for any patients who are nervous or anxious, as it typically creates a pain-free dental experience. Patients are able to be cooperative when required during treatment but typically have little to no recollection of their procedure.
IV Sedation is ideal for:
– Patients who experience anxiety or are nervous
– Lengthy or complex procedures
– people who have a pronounced gag reflex
– people with very sensitive teeth or a low pain threshold
FAQ
Will the dentist be performing the sedation or will it be someone else?
At Happy Smiles Dentist all our IV Sedations are carried out by a trained Dental anaesthesiologists. This ensures the dentist can focus on your treatment while the qualified dental sedationist is looking after you.
Where will the IV sedation be performed?
We offer an in-house service where all your IV sedation treatment can be carried out in the comfort and familiarity of our rooms. You can relax in our dental chair where your sedative is administered and your treatment completed for you
Is IV sedation painful?
No. You should not feel any pain during your procedure. After your relaxing IV sedative has been administered, it should only take a few minutes before it begins working, allowing your dentist to begin treatment with complete comfort.
You may feel a small prick on your arm or hand where the needle is used to connect to your IV tube, however we have an exceptional numbing paste that can be used on request. Most commonly, after the treatment is completed the patient has no memory of what has happened during their treatment.
Do I need to fast?
You will need to avoid food and drinks for six hours and clear fluids for the last 2 hours prior to your visit. This will all be explained to you the day before when your medical history is checked.
Can I drive afterwards?
You will need to arrange to have someone to pick you up and get you home safely so that you can rest at home for the remainder of the day.
